Etheral - Dead Air

Dead Air are a progressive rock group from Leeds in England. This four piece band have been together since early 2011 where the current line up came together. If you know me then you will know that I am not really a metal type of girl but I really do like Dead Air. But I do suprisngly thoroughly enjoy Dead Air and I am looking forward to the day I get to see them live.

I have been lucky enough to have a sneaky listen to their new EP which is being released on 20th April 2012. So there isn't too long to wait before you can have a listen. The EP has four catchy songs all of which come across as being surprisngly different so I think this EP really does show a wider range of skills from the band. I was able to listen to three of their new tracks and the final fourth one is being remained a surprise even for me until release date.

The first track which I listened to was called Impermanence which contains a strong guitar part which for me was a dominating feature of the track. Musically this track is very advanced in the sense that there is a strong feeling for the parts being able to gel together. The vocals are perhaps a subtle element within the mix but this is really effective as it allows the music to be heard at a stronger level.

The second track I listened to was Unbound which begins with a really precise guitar solo as an introduction to the song as the parts start to build up before there is a sudden hit with all the parts coming together. When looking at the lyrics for this song it was great to be able to see because the lyrics are really heartfelt for example I particularly like the line “Too many choices that make me the voices of mass”, I think this is a really effective line due to it being something that so many people will experience within the life and it is a song that people can relate to. I really liked the breakdown of this song mid way where it really does verge away from being a metal song and it comes across as being more light hearted. Even the vocals are toned down until the drums bring the song back together. This is repeated towards the end where the lyrics are then sang rather than screamed which is a really refreshing aspect but it really breaks down the track and it is something that I think Dead Air have done really well.

The final track I had a listen to was Tiresias Wake which starts really well once again with the strong guitar section, once again I looked at the lyrics and this song seems so short lyric wise but I think that it is a very musically dominated song which is what will make it so liked because there is a good mixture of vocals and instrumentals. The lyrics are yet again supplying such a deeper meaning to the song although slightly repetitive towards the end but I think it starts in such a strong way. A line of lyrics that I really liked is “I grow weak from the atrophy, yet I do not make haste”.

Something I have noticed a great deal from listening to these songs is how musically technical they all are and that Dead Air have clearly taken a great amount of time in order to construct these songs so that they are musically advanced enabling them to have these songs that they can be truly proud of.

Let me know what you think of their EP when you get the chance to listen to it.
